Through the Maze: Our mental health journey

Through The Maze charts the evolution of New Zealand’s mental health services, from the opening of the first institutions, to the current community care model.

This longform, interactive project is divided into four feature-length chapters, with an accompanying mini-documentary. The launch of this project included a discussion evening, involving those with lived-experience, mental health advocates, professional mental health workers and policy makers.

For this project, my colleague Katie Kenny and I were selected as finalists for New Zealand’s national media awards in 2017, in the category: best editorial campaign or project. We also received a letter of commendation from the Mental Health Service Awards (Australia and New Zealand).

Through the Maze was funded through a grant from the New Zealand Mental Health Foundation.
